Automating everything

The EXPO Axis in Shanghai is one of the world's largest membrane roofs. As an employee at the Knippers Helbig office (before Programming Architecture was founded), Dr. Milos Dimcic had a task to generate an acceptable grid for the 6 funnel-like structures called Sun Valleys. Using structural relaxation techniques, a smooth and statically efficient triangular grid was generated over 6 free form surfaces, resulting in ~30.000 (5.000 x 6) unique structural members and 10.500 (1740 x 6) different structural joints.
