Melbourne CallisonRTKL + The Buchan Group 2016

Chadstone Mall Roof

Overview

A 7,000 m² doubly-curved gridshell glass roof rising 31 m above what is now the largest enclosed shopping centre in the southern hemisphere. Designed by CallisonRTKL and The Buchan Group with Atelier One and manufactured by Seele, the lattice is just 210 mm thick and clears spans of up to 42 m, deriving its strength from its catenary double-curvature. On completion in 2016 it was the first roof of its kind on the continent.

Scope

In collaboration with Engelsmann Peters Engineers, OnceMore developed automated structural analysis for the free-form glass roof — analysing every one of the thousands of unique glass elements rather than relying on a sample worst-case approach.

Outcome

Each glass element was assessed in detail using hundreds of finite elements per panel, removing the human error inherent in sample-based analysis and producing precise specifications for the full roof.

Capabilities Applied

  • Automated finite-element analysis at panel scale
  • Looped per-element FE model generation
  • Collaboration with structural engineering partners
  • Specification output for unique-panel populations
